The Sapphires - ticket giveaway

Regular readers will know that I love going to the movies.  One thing I love more than going to the movies, is winning free movie tickets so that I can treat myself and a friend.  Well, now I'm going to share that experience with ten lucky (Australian-based) readers!

My generous friends at Hopscotch Films have shared the love and I have ten 2-for-1 tickets for The Sapphires.

I saw the stage show here in Melbourne a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the story told with such humour and great music.

Here's the blurb from Hopscotch Films:

The Sapphires is an inspirational tale set in the heady days of the late ‘60s about a quartet of young, talented singers from a remote Aboriginal mission, discovered and guided by a kind-hearted, soul-loving manager. Plucked from obscurity, the four spirited women with powerhouse voices - called The Sapphires - are given the opportunity to entertain American troops in Vietnam. Catapulted onto the world stage as Australia's answer to the Supremes, their journey of discovery offers them not only the chance to show off their musical skills, but find love and togetherness, experience loss and grow as women.
The Sapphires is an adaptation of the hugely successful Australian stage musical of the same name, and is inspired by the remarkable true story of writer Tony Briggs' mother and three aunts. The four Sapphires are joyfully played by AFI Award winner Deborah Mailman, Australian pop sensation Jessica Mauboy and newcomers Miranda Tapsell and Shari Sebbens. Bridesmaids actor Chris O'Dowd delivers a tour de force comic performance as their manager, that is at once incredibly funny, likeable and genuine.
Receving a ten minute standing ovation at the prestgious Cannes Film Festival, The Sapphires is a crowd-pleasing combination of comedy, heart and romance and an unbeatable soul music soundtrack, set against the racial and social upheaval of the late 1960s. A jewel-bright charmer and an Australian classic, The Sapphires is not to be missed.

  2. Hi Diva!
My favourite musical film is The Sound of Music. Absolute classic and a great story on its own. I also love the original 70s film version of Hair! It's a wonderful ride! How exciting we have an Australian musical film. Groovy Xx

  3. I love a good musical. It's hard to pick a favourite, but I think I'd have to go with Little Shop of Horrors. I loved the trio of girl backing singers in increasingly over-the-top frocks, the sassy soul singing evil blood-sucking plant, and that moment when Audrey drops from the scared little girl squeak into the full power of her singing voice just gives me the shivers.

  5. I love them all really. If I had to quick just one I think maybe Guys and Dolls. I hosted a musical movie marathon a few years back. It went so long that eventually we had to skip the plot and just play our favourite songs. I remember we played almost every song from G&D. Mind you, Kiss Me Kate and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers have some cool songs too. And recently I've rediscovered Mary Poppins and Oliver. And even more recently I've really enjoyed the massive dance numbers of the Bollywood films. (And Merryn, now that you mention it, I was singing a song from Little Shop of Horrors only this afternoon at the friends house...)

Haven't yet been to one of the Sound of Music Singalongs but I did visit the famous garden glass house years ago and to the absolute horror of my husband I couldn't resist the temtation to run around the seating singing I am 16 going on 17 in my best big loud voice. Oh to be young again!

My favourite would have to be a play put on my the amateur musical theatre group, Cloc, and it was called "Hot Mikado" a really "cool" version of the famous Gilbert and Sullivan musical. Next would be Sweet Charity , then 42nd Street.
