What I've made

I'm a crafty girl.  I'd like to share what I've made.  I'll be doing it here. The most recent items are at the top of the page and the oldest at the bottom.

10 March 2014
Another catch up post with lots of things to share. I have been a bit behind in taking photographs of my work.

Sock knitting is well under way again this year, with my third pair for the year completed yesterday. I'm enjoying all the different yarns.

I've also made the Koala, now known as "Chub" for my niece Heidi's birthday. You can read more on the post I wrote about him.

20 December 2013
It's been a while since I posted - I've been so busy knitting things and doing things. I've completed 21 pairs of socks for the year which is pretty steady going.

Pair number 21 are knitted in another gorgeous colour from the Lady Bug Fiber Company, called "Jewelled Wasp".

The 20th pair are made from a yarn I purchased on Etsy from the Lady Bug Fiber Company and the colourway is called "Nutcracker Suite". I just love the colours and the nice even stripes.

Nearly the same...

The 19th pair were finished on 22 November. I'm not sure about these. I think my needle size and tension made the stripes go off after I changed to smaller needles for the cuffs. Oh well, the effect is quite interesting.

The 18th pair for the year were finished on 13 November.
© 2013 divacultura

Finished back in October, my 17th pair of socks is knitted in a colourway called "Let's Blow this Popsicle Stand". The result does look like an explosion in a popsicle stand!

Apart from socks, I also was busy with some gifts at Christmas time.

I made Lucy the Christmas bear and a jingle ball for my niece, Demi and a fireman's hat for her brother, Cadel.

And the orange theme continues with my 16th pair of socks for the year.  These are pretty much a perfect pair too!

6 October 2013
A work colleague commissioned me to make this triangular scarf/shawlette for her.  The name of the yarn colour is Red Hot Chilli.  I think I'm coming around to yellow as a colour.  She loves the final product.

28 September 2013
Back to my standard, 4ply sock yarn for my 15th pair of socks for 2013.  This is the first time I've used this one and I'm very happy with the results.  Not a lot left over either, which makes me happy.  (I have quite a stash of leftover sock yarn!)

16 September 2013
6 ply boot socks.  Not sure about this colourway - is it masculine or feminine?

7 September 2013
Finished my beanie just in time for the Richmond Tigers vs Carlton match in the AFL finals season. While I wore my colours proudly, we didn't win.

2 September 2013
This scarf took my fancy when I saw it on Ravelry. I've already bought the yarn to make another. I might give this one away.

Still on the 6 ply - these are the thirteenth pair of socks I've finished this year.

13 August 2013
More thick socks.  I really like this colour combination.

27 July 2013
I bought some 6 ply sock yarn.  It's thicker and so knits up more quickly.  I made a few pairs. Igave this pair to a friend.

7 July 2013
I've just completed my tenth pair of socks for the year.  Love the rich wintry colours in these ones (deep green, magenta and navy blue).  The yarn is Cascade Heritage.

24 June 2013
I've been very productive of late and made some things other than socks!

"Displaced" hat
© divacultura 2013
I made this hat with myself in mind.  I was attracted to it because of its unusual asymmetrical construction.  It was interesting to make but it didn't suit me, so I gave it to a friend for her birthday.  It really suits her!
Socks #9 for the year.
©divacultura 2013
These socks are made in Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock yarn and the colour is called Bittersweet.  I gave these to my 84 year old friend Sonia.
Bathmat prototype
© divacultura
My grandmother used to crochet bathmats out of cotton yarn.  When I saw the Zpagetti yarn made from t-shirt off cuts at my local craft store I thought it would be perfect for a bathmat/floor rug.  I was right!  I adapted this by looking at one of the mats made by my grandmother and counting.  It's very thick and nice underfoot.  I used a 12mm crochet hook.
Mimku shawl/scarf
© divacultura 2013
I was wearing my Mimku shawl when a friend said she wanted one just like it.  I offered her mine and then she commissioned her one of her own.  It's a big garter stitch triangle made using Noro Kureyon on 12mm knitting needles.
Cloche
© divacultura 2013
This hat is called Lucy and is a classic cloche with an asymmetrical brim and contrasting band.  I'm pleased that I've finally invested in a "head" to block and model my hats.  This hat really suits me and I can't wait to wear it.  Just waiting for it to dry out after blocking.  I think I'll call my model Lucy after the hat.
Basketweave scarf
© divacultura 2013
This scarf is knitted in basketweave stitch using Schoppelwolle Zauberball which is a sock yarn.  The combination of colour and texture is a match made in heaven.  It seemed to take forever to finish the whole ball of yarn, but I'm really glad I kept going.  The finished scarf is 170cm long which leaves plenty of scope for wrapping.

Socks #8 for the year.
© divacultura 2013
These socks are made from the Australian Skein yarn called Top Draw Socks.  The colour is called Dolce.  They are soooo soft to wear.
Gaptastic cowl
© divacultura 2013
This cowl is made in superbulky yarn in moss stitch.  Very warm, but also very heavy.  I like the idea of this more than the reality of it.  (ETA - I gave it to my friend Zoe - she loves it.)

6 May 2013
Two more finished items - another pair of socks (this time for me) and a chunky scarf which was commissioned by a work colleague.

21 April 2013
Two more pairs of socks finished off - in between a few other works in progress and continuing to crochet granny squares.

This first pair is made from Lorna's Laces and the colour is Christian Grey from the 50 Skeins of Grey collection.  I'm not joking.  Whatever the inspiration, I love the soft muted greys.

© divacultura 2013
This second pair is made in a Bare Face Leicester yarn from Blue Mountains dyer, Skein.  They say that BFL yarn does not need to be mixed with nylon for strength.  Will be interested to see how they wear.  The colour is called Opaque.

23 March 2013
Fourth pair of socks for the year and this pair is for me!  I mucked up the Herringbone rib stitch because I misread the pattern.  By the time I noticed, I realised that I had also made quite a pretty rib pattern of my own anyway.  Accidents can lead to happy inventions!  They are knit from Skein's Top Draw Sock yarn and the colour is called "Fig".  Very soft fabric with rich colours.  Love this yarn!

3 March 2013
Here is the third pair of finished socks for 2013.  I am committed to knitting my stash yarn!  These are for one of my favourite supporters of the Richmond Tigers AFL team.  Shhh!  He doesn't know yet.

23 February 2013
LOVE this yarn.  I bought it on Etsy.  It comes from Germany and I just love the colour combination - purple, aqua and orange!

17 February 2013
These were to be for Dad's birthday, but I ran out of yarn a few rows from the end.  Luckily I found the same colour in Tasmania and was able to do a yarn swap.  That's why it took so long to finish - and not in time for Dad's birthday!  The yarn is Skein which comes from the Blue Mountains.  It is 80% merino wool and 20% nylon and is gloriously soft.  The colour is called "Hazel".

My first finished pair of socks for 2013 (or my 18th pair started in 2012).  I started these on 18 December using yarn I bought on Etsy.  I love the finished stripes, but the colour came off on my hands while I was knitting.

17 December 2012
I had lots of fun knitting Christmas baubles for Christmas gifts this year.  I'd never done this kind of colour work before where I had to follow a graph, so it was great to learn a new technique and practise it on a small scale.  The patterns came from the book 55 Christmas balls to knit by Arne & Carlos.  I made all of these between 5 November and 17 December.

15 December 2012
My seventeenth pair of socks for the year (the 16th completed pair).  I gave these to Dad as part of his Christmas.  He gave me lots of feedback on what works best and which yarns wear well and are comfortable to wear.  These are knitted with Regia sock yarn.

18 November 2012

These socks have been a bit of a trial.  I used a needle that was far too small the first time, following the tension recommendations on the pattern.  I kept knitting even as my brain was saying "these are way too small, these are going to be way too tight, these have no stretch in them".  So I pulled out what I'd done (just after the heel)  and started again.  This time, it's a happier experience.

The pattern is easy to memorise and is called "mockery" - I suppose because it gives the appearance of cables, without being cables (mock cables).  The pattern is just a series of decreases and yarn overs over a ten row repeat.

I'm very happy with my yarn choice for this pattern.  I think it shows both the yarn and the pattern to great effect.  It's from Mountain Colors.  The yarn is called Crazyfoot and is a merino/nylon blend.  The colour is called Harmony Rose.  Have cast on the second sock and am looking forward to having a completed pair for myself in this yarn.

This is a new (to me) yarn from Japanese company Noro.  It's a blend of wool, cotton, silk and nylon and the finished fabric is lovely and soft.  As always, the colours are stunning.  My fourteenth pair of socks for the year.

10 October 2012
I had 109 g of soft, variegated grey yarn leftover from the Creekbed Scarf that I made this year.  (Scroll down for a picture.)  I used it to make this cute Hitchhiker Scarf - a long, skinny triangle with jagged "teeth" down one edge.

21 September 2012
My thirteenth pair of socks for the year.  This is the first time I've used this yarn and I don't think I'll be using it again.  The colours are pretty, but there was a knot and two completely different colours were joined (pink to grey).  It's quite splitty to knit and I think the socks are going to go very fuzzy after washing.

8 September 2012

The twelfth pair of socks went to Dad for Father's Day.  Delays in the factory led to late delivery, but the requested modifications have been happily noted.

27 August 2012
Here is the eleventh pair of socks completed this year.  I bought this hand dyed yarn on Etsy.  Very bright!

My friend Rose inspired me to make this cowl after I saw the one she made in a rainbow of colours.  I call this the Vibration Cowl because the colours vibrate very strongly together.  It's a bit narrower than I would have liked, so is quite a snug fit.  If I make another I'd go up to 4.5mm needles and cast on about 15 more stitches.  I used the random stripe generator again to make the stripe pattern.

6 August 2012
I have a fair few partial balls of yarn left over from making the Creekbed Scarf (below).  With the mouse tail colour I decided to make a hat.  The pattern is called "Felicity" and I love the shape.

2 August 2012
I actually finished knitting this scarf a few weeks ago, but didn't have the energy to sew in all the ends and block it.  I finally did that today and am very happy with the result.  The design is called the Creekbed Scarf and looking at the design, I think that's a very apt name.  It's knitted in four different shades of yarn, ranging from dark purple, to jacaranda purple, to a mauve/grey (the colour is called "mouse tail") and then a soft variegated grey.  I'm very happy with the result!  The hardest part was casting on the required 441 stitches - it's knitted lengthwise!  Here it is pinned out on the ironing board for wet blocking.  Can't wait to wear it.  Finished dimensions are 25cm wide and about 143cm long.

2 July 2012
I made a slouchy beanie out of some left over sock yarn for a female relative's birthday.  Dad already has a pair of socks that match!  I love the design and think I need one too.  This is great, mindless TV knitting.

30 June 2012
Endless days trapped at home with the 'flu means I can spend guilt-free time in front of the television knitting. Here is the tenth pair of socks I've completed for the year.  The colour is called "Hoochie Mama".  I like them.

Aren't the colours bright!

25 June 2012
I had to refrain from posting this picture of Mum's birthday present until she had received it.

I took the idea from Better Homes and Gardens magazine and adapted it.  The flowers are crocheted in dark pink, lighter pink, red and orange.  I embroidered the stems with chain stitch onto a store bought cushion cover.  Very pretty!  Mum just called to say that she received it and loves it.

Also in the parcel was a pair of socks for Father. (#7 for the year, listed below.)

Socks # 9 for the year completed.  I hated knitting with this yarn, but think the finished product is quite attractive.

6 June 2012
I've written before about my love of unusual colour combinations.  Lately I have been obsessed with pink and red together.  I decided to experiment and improvised this design.  It's a Mobius strip which can be worn in lots of different ways - hanging, looped, wrapped, short, long...you name it.  I used a random strip generator I found over at Biscuits and Jam.  The yarn I've used is super squishy and was lovely to knit.

I think this is my new favourite thing!  Perfect to brighten up Melbourne black.

This eighth pair of socks for the year is for a friend's birthday.  Her birthday is a month away, so I'm well on schedule.  They seemed to fly off the needles.  They are knitted in adult size small and I have about one third of the yarn left.

My sixth pair of socks for the year.  I'm working my way through a lovely stash of sock yarn.  My spare room is like a yarn shop!  I think these socks are such pretty colours.  And they have aloe vera and jojoba in them.  Apparently.

26 April 2012
I finished this triangle scarf tonight.  It's made from beautiful hand spun and hand dyed yarn from South Australia.  It's so soft and the colours are yummy.

My third completed pair of socks for 2012.  Was holding my breath as I neared the end.  Thought I was going to run out of yarn, but I didn't! Even had a tiny bit left over.

9 September 2011 -
Just finished this sock.  For Father's Day, my father received three socks.  The pair completed on 21 August (below) and one of these.  I ran out of time and thought it was better for Dad to receive 3 socks instead of two.  He enjoyed the joke.

Just finished today (21 August 2011) and so they're still damp and on the sock blockers:

  1. Oh wow! I love your work Tanya! You're a wiz! I love the little hats, are they kids sizes? If so I have 4 little heads that I'd like to keep warm with your artistry! 3 girls & 1 boy. The hats remind me of little gumnuts! Gorgeous. Xx

  2. Thanks Cat! The "little hats" are actually egg cosies. I had commissions from two retailers for Easter. Essentially I just scaled back a basic hat recipe to make them egg sized.
The watermelon hat and the teal hat are being worn now by my niece and nephew respectively.
    Thanks for looking.

    1. Crivens! Those hats are for eggs??!! Far too small for my sweet little heads. I've got a set of twin girls 2 years old and I'd love a strawberry hat and some other kind of berry. And I want a strawb hat too! I must call you for a lesson. I'm a big fan of your work, luvvie!

    1. Thanks Rose! I can't wait to wear it! I didn't really like the colours used by the designer either. I LOVE working with colour though. It's a challenge to see what else is possible when you've already seen the original.
